Money does not grow on trees. That's what parents usually tell their kids especially those whose hobby is to bug them to buy this and that. The thing is, telling your kid that money does not come from a bottomless pit is not enough for them to see its value. What parents fail to do is make their kids realize that.

It's hard for a kid who is very dependent for everything he needs on his parents to actually see the importance of money, let alone saving. It is therefore imperative that as early now, as young as your kid is, you start teaching him the value of money, working hard for it, and saving it for emergency or future use.

Primarily, you have to establish in your kid's mind the worth of money by showing him that it is not something that is easy to acquire. Bring him to your office or to your spouse's work place for a day and show him that you have to work very hard to earn the money you use to provide him the things he needs.

Also, don't succumb to every little wish he makes. Giving him everything that he wants, even those that he does not need, like a cotton candy every fifteen minutes, is like teaching him that getting money is as easy as a wink of an eye.

Instead, if there's a toy gadget that he wants so badly but you also think is impractical like the expensive toy robot on display in the local toy store, the fair thing to do is to let him work hard for it. Let him do little chores for you like helping in the kitchen or looking after his younger siblings and then reward him with cash incentives that he can save to buy for that particular toy that he really likes.

By practicing these things, you're instilling in his mind that money is something you work hard for to earn.

To further encourage him to put up his own savings, enlighten him on its advantages. Tell him that when time comes that he needs some money for himself or during urgent situations but mommy and daddy are not around, he has his piggy bank to rely on.

Also, there are toy manufacturers like Kidkraft who have created kid furniture dedicated in teaching kids the significance of saving money while having fun. You can buy your kid the KidKraft Locomotive Money Box which is a bright colored train with a see-thru window which allows your kid to see how much has been saved. This kid furniture which he could also play with make saving such a fun experience for him.

Another nice money box again from KidKraft is the KidKraft Purse Money Box which is a trendy wooden purse money box with a colourful beaded handle and lavender feather trim. This kid saving furniture which is ideal for little girls will allow your child to see how a few nickels can go a long way.

Being a good example is one of the best ways to teach your kid to save. Because a child almost always looks up to his parents, showing him how you yourself save up for the rainy day will make him want to do it himself.

Reinforcing responsible attitude towards saving should definitely begin at an early age. Don't wait for your child to grow up and start working before you tell him about the story of the kid who didn't like to save money. Instil positive saving habits and your child will surely reap off the long term benefit when he grows up and start to manage money on his own.
